Life Path Number

Written by Ren Alen Opus Numerology Services

The Life Path number is the one most people meet first, and the one that carries the most weight. It comes from your full date of birth, it never changes, and it describes the road rather than the traveller: the problems that keep coming back, the work that comes easily, and the trade-off you will be asked to make over and over.

What the Life Path number shows

Everything else in a chart describes a part of you. The Life Path describes the shape of the life those parts are living in. It is the difference between asking what someone is like and asking what keeps happening to them.

In practice it answers three things. What drives you when nothing is forcing you. Which situations you handle well without trying, and which ones cost you disproportionately. And what the recurring cost of your own temperament is — the bill that arrives every few years in a slightly different envelope.

It does not change with your name, your marriage, your country or your job. That is exactly why it is the anchor of a reading: everything else is measured against it.

The Life Path is one number of several, and on its own it tells you the road without telling you who is driving. A Complete Numerology Reading puts it next to the numbers from your name and the cycle you are standing in right now.

How to work it out

Add up the digits of your birth year, your birth month and your birth day, then add the three sums together. Reduce the total by adding its digits until one digit is left, unless you reach 11, 22 or 33 on the way: those are master numbers and stay whole.

Example: born 03.28.1990
Year: 1+9+9+0 = 19
Month: 0+3 = 3
Day: 2+8 = 10
Total: 19+3+10 = 32 → 3+2 = 5 (written 32/5)

  • A day of 11 or 22 stays whole. If you were born on the 11th, it goes into the sum as 11, not 1+1; the 22nd goes in as 22.
  • November is not a master month. The 11th month always counts as 1+1 = 2.
  • Born in 2000 or later? The year starts at 20: 2002 counts as 20+0+2 = 22. So 10.14.2002 gives 22+1+5 = 28 → 10 → 1.
  • Master numbers are never reduced. A total of 11, 22 or 33 stays as it is, and 29, 38 or 47 stop at 11. There is no “11/2” Life Path, only an 11.
  • A total of 20 is a 20/11, not a 2. That is why there is no 2 Life Path in this method.

The same digits also go into your chart grid, where they show which numbers from 1 to 9 are missing from your date. If you would rather not add it up by hand, the free numerology calculator does it as you type.

The numbers as Life Path Number

1

Life Path Number 1

Leader, director

As a Life Path, the 1 is driven by autonomy: you want to make your own decisions, lead where others hold back and build something that carries your name. The work that fits puts decisions and new starts in your hands, such as your own business or a leadership role.

Relationship trouble is especially likely with a 28/1 total (and for people born on the 28th), most of all once money and business are going well.

Strengths
  • Decides fast, even under pressure
  • Goes first where others hesitate
  • Builds something from nothing
  • Takes responsibility without being asked
Shadow side
  • Turns everything into a contest
  • Starts ten things, finishes few
  • Carries alone what needs help
  • Hears criticism as a personal attack

2

Life Path Number 2

Supporter

There is no 2 Life Path in the Opus practical system. A birth date that would reduce to 2 totals 20 instead, and in numerology 0 and 9 behave the same way mathematically: add either one to a number and its reduced value does not change. So 20, just like 29, counts as a hidden 11. The 20/11 is the softer form of the 11, with the same charisma and intuition in a calmer, more cooperative and more sensitive package.

The last date that can total 20 is 10.10.1980, and from 2000 on the sum starts at 20, so it can't happen at all; a 2 can still appear as your Day Number or in your name.

Strengths
  • The intuition and charisma of the 11
  • Cooperative rather than dominant
  • Calmer and more sensitive than other 11s
Shadow side
  • The nervous tension every 11 carries
  • Soaks up other people's moods
  • Tries to fit a 2 description that isn't really them

  • Connects people who would never meet otherwise
  • Moves people to act with words
  • Gives ideas a form others can see
  • Keeps spirits up when things are hard

4

Life Path Number 4

Precise, persistent

As a Life Path, the 4 is after security you can touch: a stable income, a reliable relationship, systems that work and something solid to leave behind. It fits work where precision and staying power count for more than speed, such as finance, accounting, law, security, construction or manufacturing.

Strengths
  • Builds foundations that last
  • Finishes whatever it starts
  • Brings order where there is chaos
  • Stays reliable when it gets hard
Shadow side
  • Freezes when the routine is upset
  • Buries feelings in work
  • Worries about money even when there is enough
  • Stays in the wrong place because it is familiar

5

Life Path Number 5

Explorer

As a Life Path, the 5 wants to decide freely how it lives and works, and to experience as many places, people and challenges as possible. It fits variety and movement (your own business, travel, tourism, sales, media, entertainment) and fits badly into fixed hours under strict rules.

Strengths
  • Adapts quickly to anything new
  • Gives other people confidence
  • Finds a way through where others see a wall
  • Starts over without fear
Shadow side
  • Runs from commitment and obligation
  • Gets bored before things pay off
  • Careless with money and promises
  • Spreads itself across too many things
6

Life Path Number 6

Team player

As a Life Path, the 6 works toward security and comfort for itself and its people: a home, a close family or team, financial well-being and peace in the group. It fits roles built on cooperation, care and a sense of beauty, such as middle management, HR, hospitality, healthcare, law enforcement or the arts.

Strengths
  • Holds a family or a team together
  • Makes peace between people
  • Keeps promises and finishes the work
  • Creates a home people want to come back to
Shadow side
  • Avoids conflict and hard decisions
  • Hands out advice nobody asked for
  • Rarely admits a mistake without a “but”
  • Cares more about money than it admits
7

Life Path Number 7

Deliberate thinker

As a Life Path, the 7 wants to understand how things and people really work, and to go deep enough in a field to master it. It walks its own path at its own pace, and fits research, analysis, planning, IT, engineering, healing and teaching: anywhere understanding matters more than show.

Strengths
  • Finds the real cause of a problem
  • Always has a plan B, C and D
  • Stays calm when others panic
  • Learns a field down to its depths
Shadow side
  • Analyzes instead of acting
  • Keeps feelings locked away
  • Shuts people out, then misses them
  • Broods on things in silence for months
8

Life Path Number 8

Achiever, businessperson

As a Life Path, the 8 wants to become someone, not just anyone: to be among the best in its field, build financial success on its own and be in control. It fits leadership, business, finance and demanding or specialized roles with high stakes, and never an average role.

Strengths
  • Builds big things from almost nothing
  • Makes the hard call under pressure
  • Carries responsibility others can't
  • Gets back up after a fall
Shadow side
  • Measures people by money and position
  • Wants to control everything and everyone
  • Makes a battle out of the smallest slight
  • Risks everything for a bigger win
9

Life Path Number 9

Idealist, manipulator

As a Life Path, the 9 works for the big picture and a perfect end result rather than small milestones, and it wants to have an effect on many people. It adapts to its surroundings like a chameleon, so the company it keeps shapes it. It fits leading big projects, teaching, healing, the arts, acting and politics.

Strengths
  • Sees the whole map, not just the next step
  • Rallies people behind an idea
  • Learns almost anything quickly
  • Fixes what is broken in other people's lives
Shadow side
  • Dreams instead of doing
  • Takes on the habits of whoever is around
  • Can't take criticism of its ideas
  • Ego inflates when it is better than others
11

Life Path Number 11

Master Intuitive, star

As a Life Path, the 11 is never reduced to a 2. It pairs strong logic with unfiltered intuition, and its path is to lead, inspire and open new directions, often by shaping how other people feel about something. It fits work in front of people: performing, sport, coaching, inventing and pioneering projects.

Totals of 11, 29, 38 and 47 all give an 11; a 38/11 usually shows the more dominant side, a 20/11 the softer one.

Strengths
  • Senses what is coming before others do
  • Draws attention just by being there
  • Uses intuition and logic together
  • Lifts others with a big vision
Shadow side
  • Lives with constant nervous tension
  • Takes on the mood of everyone around
  • Big ideas, little execution
  • Mood swings that hit the people closest
22

Life Path Number 22

Master Builder, big-league player

As a Life Path, the 22 is not a 4, although it shares the 4's practical streak. Its path is to turn big plans into working reality (large projects, systems, organizations), usually from the background and often for other people's benefit. It performs best under pressure and in chaos.

Strengths
  • Turns a vision into something real
  • Stays steady under enormous pressure
  • Rebuilds even after a total collapse
  • Lifts up the people who stand by it
Shadow side
  • Can't switch off, even on vacation
  • Wants to control and do everything itself
  • Shuts emotion out of decisions
  • Merciless when betrayed
33

Life Path Number 33

Master Teacher, cult leader

As a Life Path, the 33 is not a 6, although a lot of the 6 shows in it. Its path is to pass on knowledge, ideas and direction to many people at once and to bring them together behind a shared goal, reaching results through others more than with its own hands. It fits teaching, advising, healing, negotiating and leading communities.

A 33 Life Path comes only from a birth-date total of exactly 33.

Strengths
  • Makes complicated things easy to understand
  • Brings scattered people together
  • Spots social trends early
  • Negotiates its way to common ground
Shadow side
  • Teaches and advises uninvited
  • Cares too much about appearances
  • Won't accept criticism of its beliefs
  • Takes quiet revenge when humiliated
